What's better than sitting on the porch in January? Sitting on the porch in February. The sun is getting stronger, the days are getting longer and those Sea Gulls are out there just flying around having a grand time. In the morning you can watch the Dolphins headin' west, the Pelicans catching breakfast, and later in the afternoon sometimes you can see them all again, headin' east or... sometimes they reverse their pattern....it's all about "island time".

I was going to post pictures today but I looked at my recent shots and had to laugh, they all look the same, this year, last year, 2010.....the scenery never changes. And that is why I love this island so much.

The days are getting longer and the mornings are staying just a touch darker as we begin to think about early spring. I am always in awe when we are on the island in the winter, the night sky is so clear and the stars seem close enough that you can touch them, and of course the gentle sound of the surf. Total peace surrounds us.

And yes, the peacefulness does surround Sea N Starz. From the front porches (Gulf side) there are the unobstructed views of the Gulf, and on the back porches, looking between the tall pines you can see the Bay.

I was on the island last Friday and the weather was beautiful, warm enough for swimming, a wonderful gentle breeze with distant sounds of Sea Gulls providing background music along with the lapping of the surf splashing onto the sand.

I love this time of year, and the island takes on its own peaceful, serene personality.

Life's little surprises had a special treat in store for me on that trip. I had the extreme pleasure of meeting our departing guests. Have you ever met someone for the first time and yet you have known them for a lifetime?

Miss Lily, a sweet little "senior" puppy (a rescue) was being loaded into the car but I did get a chance to meet her. What a precious little girl. The elevator isn't only for the convenience of our special needs guests, but for our special needs pets too. At 10 years old, Miss Lily was pleased with that "moving box that goes up and down". And, she has a puppy buggy for strolling on the beach.

Sascha (rescue) & Samson were all tucked in their "digs" waiting for the family to get rolling. It was so funny, there stands a stranger, close to their car and on "their" property. Oh, the stress. (o:

It's been awhile since I posted. The weather on the island is changing, cool mornings and warm afternoons - perfect "beach" weather.

Our 2012 calendar has been active, we have almost booked July, only one week remains open. I have had several inquires about our 2012 rates, and I am happy to say that they will remain the same as this year.

And you will notice we now have music - well, not music (although it is music to my ears) but sounds of the sea. Hope you enjoy the sound of the waves.

My Mom

I don't write about my personal life but having a picture of my Mom at the end of this story is very important to me. Mom was very instrumental in helping us achieve the dream of owning a beach house.
I am one of those special children who was blessed with the most wonderful parents ever. EVER.

I had a beautiful childhood, and losing my parents was devastating, but I know where they are and that we will be together again, for eternity.

The house had been rented from June, 2007, the calendar was full so it was not possible to take my Mom down for a family vacation, but I did take her for one of those insane turn around trips (that I am always making). Our very first monthly renters were coming in for the month so on October 1, 2007 I took Mom down. I wanted to put flowers in the house and show her what she had helped us achieve. And plan when we could vacation at the house.

I am so thankful that we made the trip. Mom wasn't feeling well so I showed her the house, made her take a rest and we had our picnic lunch on the screened porch - and she fell asleep.

I wasn't prepared for what was to take place....on October 19th she was not feeling well and we went to the hospital.....and that was the day that God called her home. I sat with her until she left, I was there when my Dad left too and for that I am so grateful.

I do know that her passing was a special blessing, she didn't suffer, it was just her time to go to our Lord. My parents were the most wonderful, caring, loving parents and I have a lifetime of wonderful memories. Yes, I am sad - but I have been blessed beyond explanation.

Thank you for following my story, it was fun putting the pictures together and it brought back so many fun memories.

Now that summer is winding down it's time to think about a fall vacation. Our favorite time of the year on St. George Island is in the fall, winter, and early spring. The weather is wonderful, it's very quiet and our rates are very reasonable.

We are now offering monthly rentals for March and August. Reservations for 2012 are available and contracts will go out after the first of the year, at that time a $500. reservation deposit will secure your vacation.

If you would like to stay at Sea N Starz next year please contact me. Our returning guests receive a 10% discount and they know that booking early secures their favorite vacation time.

Our Guests

I have always said how blessed and grateful we are for having so many wonderful guests vacationing at Sea N Starz. We have made wonderful friends, have shared funny stories, and have prayed together.

Taking a break from those "boring" construction pictures I would like to tell you a little bit about how we run Sea N Starz. Many of our reservations come from VacationRentals.com but also directly from our website.

I am so blessed, so many of our guests return year after year, and it just humbles me. And we love to pamper our guests, new and returning guests alike. Our returning guests always have the opportunity to book the same week for the next year. I take reservations all year for the coming year but send out the paperwork after January 1st. and then request a reservation deposit. A 50% payment is due 60 days prior to arrival, the remaining balance is due 14 days prior to arrival.

We have a 10% discount for all our returning guests on all future reservations.
New for this year are additions to our monthly calendar, we have added March & August for monthly stays.

Friday....

The exterior was done and all work turned to the interior. Bathrooms were all installed except the plumbing had to be hooked up - and I wanted to spend the night.

Well, we didn't have the CO yet so the house was not deemed livable, so....I didn't want to "live" in it - just spend the night.

But, always getting my own way, Mark & David had Franklin (King's Plumbing) come in and hook up one bathroom for me, and he chose the accessible bath. Okay, so I would sleep in the coral guest bedroom.


Fit for a princess....

Hey, I can rough it - I had my favorite quilt with me, my pillow, bath supplies, what else was there?

HOT WATER.

Mark & David stopped by to make sure everything was ready for my stay. At this point there were no window coverings, and the interior doors were in the designated rooms but not hung. No big deal - until Mark called my attention to that bathroom - no window covering, so? Well, they ran with that, told me there was a "peeping tom" on the island and he had high powered binoculars, and the story keep growing as I listened intently. The fools thought they really had me nervous - and left.

Oh, but before they left David turned on the water heaters for me. Or - so he thought. I had to stand there for hours (not really) listening how when the heaters stopped making gurgling noises I just had to flip that switch. Okay - that's easy enough. And so they left. I had a nice picnic supper, 30 minutes later I was bored to death and then it got dark - so off to bed, rather off to the floor.

The surf was very stormy & loud and I used my cell phone for a night light. I think I looked at the time every 30 minutes and listened to all the "house noises", but I wasn't bothered.

Needless to say, I didn't "sleep in", at 4 am I went into the bathroom and looked at that uncovered window - and laughed. Those two clowns thought I bought the peeping tom story - but just is case.....I just moved the door in front of the window and that was that - window covering.

Shower time - that hot water sure was taking an awful long time - well, there was NO hot water. David didn't do the first turn on correctly and had me turn the blasted things off. Do you know how cold "street cold" water is? In MARCH? It actually hurts your heart - honest. But I showered, and mumbled a few "choice" words about David. Then had my nice, COLD breakfast out of my cooler. I don't think I was ever that cold in my life.

Show time - knock on the door, ah, the gruesome twosome. This was so much fun. They asked if I saw "tom" he had been seen lurking around the house - nope. And then I ruined the fun - showed them my "window covering", I was the only one laughing.

David went into the laundry room to turn off the water heaters and saw that they weren't on. He looked at me and I just said "oh, I turned them off this morning", I think I was still shaking but I would never let on what had happened. Not then - but I would have my day.

Heavy storms were expected so I started for home very early. And that was my first night in the house...

These last 3 are all of the house front, facing the Gulf.

It's all in the name. Naming the house was fun. The many years that we had been vacationers (October or January) we always admired the crystal clear sky & stars at night. In the winter you can almost reach up and pick a star out of the sky - it's that clear.
I had 3 favorites but they were taken so I decided to use the sky as my theme. Seeing stars is what I love to do on vacation but that seemed to be so "normal" and normal I am not. So, a play on words would make it fun. Thus Sea N' Starz, but now it's just Sea N Starz. The spelling of stars comes from a friend who was a personal trainer and his license plate read Lotasiz, so that is where the z comes from in stars.

Another Friday....well, a day early.

We have been blessed with the most wonderful guests who have stayed at Sea N Starz. I receive so many e-mails about how much our guests enjoy the house and love the "special" attention - that is what we are all about.

We receive gifts, notes of thanks and even an invitation to lunch at Sea N Starz with one of our guests.

Doughnut, thank you. You are always welcome to come for another vacation. Oh, you can bring your "humans" too. (o:

That Strange Opening in the Wall...

As promised, here is a rather funny story about where the flat screen television was going.

To the left is the rounded wall, to the right is the kitchen. We made the television built in with the "guts" on the inside, for reasons of our own and made that area our secret pantry, owners closet.

Fridays were half days for the sub-contractors, they worked until noon, went to Mark's office for their paycheck and left for the weekend. Most of them.....

On this particular Friday the dry wall contractor came back to have his lunch and clean up. And there I was, having my lunch. We introduced ourselves and I could tell something was bothering him. Ah, finally he couldn't take it anymore. "What is this opening for?" he asked. It just popped into my head..."oh, that is where the bar is going, we are having a bartender coming in the evenings for our renting guests". The look on his face was priceless, and to this day I don't know how I did not burst out laughing, but I kept my cool.

"Really, is that what it's going to be?" he asked. "Yes, of course, what else could it be?", I managed to get out without even a smile. "WOW" he said. He finished his lunch, shook my hand and off he went. I lost it - I laughed so hard that I was crying even harder.

Mark stopped by and it was obvious that I had been crying and I told him what I did. I started laughing/crying all over again, and he joined right in. He promised that he would never say a word. And the poor guy called Mark asking all about that bar, and right on cue Mark told him the same story.

It's all about the name....

About this time during construction it was time to name the house. We were planning a cook-out for the sub-contractors, our way of saying "thank you for all your hard work, and we appreciate you". And so the party was planned.

Ah, but the one "guest" who was not invited, planned on, or wanted - "Old Man Winter". It was February and we had been planning this for over a month. We were having the cook-out under the house, before the concrete was poured. The grills were coming from the Fire House, I had everything ordered, and all was right with the world. NOT...
Backing up a bit. Mark's Dad passed away in December, 2006 and of course we had planned on having the party early in the month since the weather was still quite mild. We put everything on hold, Mark needed time to grieve and begin the healing process. So we decided February would be a great month. The weather is warming up on the island and it will be perfect. Pfft.

So, we were all watching the weather leading up to party day. And the temperatures just kept dropping....and dropping. It was COLD, in the low 30's and Saturday morning Mark called and said the cook-out would be at the Firehouse. We loaded up and headed to the island. And it was great. Everyone enjoyed the food and fellowship. And it stayed cold all day.
Oh, I said "it's all about the name", next time the story of naming the house.
Let's go inside and see what is going on...

Another Friday, another story...

Before construction began I had decided that I wanted a light blue house, dark blue roof and very bright white trim. It was all set in stone, or should I say - sand. And the idea began to sink, FAST.
When it was time to pick out colors for the roof & siding Mark insisted that I take the samples home, just in case I wanted to change my mind. "Never will happen", I said. And of course, "never say never". I glanced at the samples and there it was - GREEN. Note: I am not a green person, never really liked the color. Rob was in agreement that it would look very nice, I think the blue was not his first choice but he would never say that. He was in charge of all the structural and I was in charge of cosmetics.

After being laughed at, lots of joking about "I never change my mind", we sat down and ordered the roofing and siding. Light green with dark green roof. It was "the new blue", and the joking and poking fun continued. Mark had never seen the combination and I think he was a bit nervous ( and after it was done he really loved our choice). And did it WOW everybody.

Roofers...the next Friday I did not go down, I knew the roofers were working and after seeing them up there once, that was enough. They would walk to the very edge and pose for pictures. They were fearless.

While the upstairs was being framed out the siding guy stopped to see how things were going. It just happened to be on a Friday while I was there, had been planned by Mark, they thought that was a secret surprise.
I met most of the sub-contractors and everyone was so helpful and excited with the way the house was progressing.

If you look closely on the top floor (second photo from the left) you can see the beginnings of the rounded wall in the living room. That was Rob's design, it took some special engineering planning and re-planning but it turned out just as he wanted. It is quite a nice feature.

Another Friday, another story...

I was on the island when the pilings were being driven into the ground, it was so loud, and you could actually feel the earth tremble with each "thud". I was amazed at the speed and precision of this phase of construction. Lunch time came, the men sat down and had their lunch like nothing was out of the ordinary.

I thought I could still feel the earth shaking....

Let There Be Dirt

But first came.....the Fire Truck

Oh, this was fun....our builder had arranged for the Fire Chief to bring the "big guns" hook & ladder truck down and take us up for a view and help with placement of the foundation. Great idea......but

Of course what happened next really embarrassed me..... about 2 blocks before the lot all of a sudden the Fire Truck's lights began flashing, the siren blared.....and what seemed to be thousands of people (all of 4) gathered. I wanted to hide in the sand. Just the Fire Chief having some fun. (o:

This was mid September (2006) and I received an e-mail from Kristen Shelby (St. George Island Realty) that Jason's trucks were hauling dirt down toward our property. Yep, it was us. At lunchtime she drove down to take pictures for me. On such a tiny island not much goes unnoticed. (o:

"What is that shelf thing by that window? Why, it's a 'Pass Thru' of course."
When we were planning the design of SEA N STARZ we each had ideas of what we would enjoy.

Rob decided that a shelf outside the kitchen window would be a fun thing to have, so you could step out onto the porch to watch the sunset with maybe a soft drink or glass of wine or ....that would be passed out to you.

We had placed the house exactly where we wanted it on the lot and moved on to other plans. However, when the back porches (identical porch on the second floor) were built we noticed that you could see the Bay from both porches. An unexpected surprise.

If you look closely at the window with the Sea Horse, there is no screen. We removed it so that it's possible to open that window & call in to whoever is in the kitchen and "place your drink order" while waiting for the sun to set.

Decisions, decisions, which view to look at over morning coffee? The rising sun or the setting moon? Decisions, decisions.

Here are some pictures of the restored lighthouse. It was fun climbing to the top. There are 92 steps, but they are a good size, wooden and have backs, or toe kicks. If they didn't I would have waited outside. When the house was being built the "big" joke was the outside steps going to the second floor. Our builder almost had to sign his name in blood stating that there were to be toe kicks on the backs of the steps. Everyone had a lot of fun teasing me - the famous saying was, "oh no, we made a mistake with those steps"...

It's a beautiful early morning.

This is what we are looking at while having our morning coffee. The surf is fairly quiet and we see only one shrimp boat on the horizon. Last night at bedtime there were 6.

It seems that they now are slipping just over the horizon where we can't see them. They still have their lights on so it's easy to track them.

My favorite thing to do here is sit on the porch and do my daily devotions early in the morning. It's a perfect setting to sit and give thanks to the beauty that surrounds us and remember that all of this is a gift, a gift from God. I give thanks.

It is a stunning day on the island. Cool (mid 60's) very blue sky, and a restful, soft breeze, with a full moon tomorrow night.

There are 4 shrimp boats on the horizon and a few Sea Gulls just flew in for an afternoon dip in the pool, and off they flew. I will be posting some pictures, although I laugh when I take new ones - the scenery never changes. Tomorrow we are going to the lighthouse and I will have some "new" scenery to post.

ISLAND (Spring) FEVER

Almost a full moon...

It is spring on St. George Island. We were down for a few days and it was heaven on earth. The days were sunny, cool (60's) & the nights dipped into the low 50's.

We left just before the moon was at its fullest and walking the dogs at night under just the moonlight was wonderful. The sky was so clear that it seemed you could just reach up and pick stars out of the sky.

But it was noisy - besides being able to hear the water lapping onto the beach, the birds were chirping and singing most of the day. That is called being noisy on the island. My kind of noise.

The Gulf is still a bit cool but the pool is just perfect - perfect for swimming.

It's hard to believe that we will be beginning our 4th year as a rental property. It seems like just yesterday that the house was being built and I was there every Friday to watch & document its progress. The word "rental" isn't my choice. We have so many wonderful guests that return year after year and it's impossible not to become friends. I read our Guest Book and it just takes my breath away when so many people thank us and the "God Bless You" brings tears, no matter how many times I read the book.

And our Pet Guest Book is great. Guests write through the eyes of their pets and it just makes for fun reading. Our guests (the human kind) are very creative.

I have only shared this with a few of our guests but it's time to tell everyone who may read this post. When the house was being built I posted Bible verses behind every wall, window frame, the elevator shaft & stairwell. The first post a note was in the kids room, Psalm 127:1 which has become our verse for SEA N STARZ.

I went through every Book and chose a verse fitting to construction that week. I don't know if the sub-contractors had to move some while they worked, but every post a note was exactly in place the next time I went down. Now you know....

Spring Is In The Air

Well, for some of us, that is....and the island is beautiful, NO SNOW - I promise. The days are getting longer, evenings are perfect for a stroll on the beach.

Our "summer" reservation calendar is filling up, available dates- May 21-28, May 28-June 4, and July 23-30 are open. Please contact me if you want to book your vacation.

Welcome to SEA N STARZ Blog.

The island is beautiful during the winter months. Lovely cool days and nights that a nice fire in the fireplace rounds out a perfect day.

We have weekly and monthly rates, our returning guests receive a 10% discount on all their future reservations. The house is special needs friendly with elevator and an accessible bathroom large enough for a wheelchair to comfortably operate, and shower that a wheelchair can roll into easily.
